Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey plays at Full Tilt Poker. His nickname is Tiger Woods of Poker.
Phil Ivey is one of the best young poker players today having won 5 WSOP bracelets before his 30th birthday.
Ivey was born in February 1976 in Riverside California, but grew up in New Jersey. It was while working for a telemarketing firm in his early twenties that he honed his poker skills. These skills held him in good stead in the World Series of Poker tournaments. He won his first bracelet in Pot Limit Omaha in 2000. Then in 2002 World Series he won three bracelets tying for the most wins in a year with two other greats. The events he won were 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo, S.H.O.E. and 7 Card Stud. His last win came in 2005 with a prize of $635,603. He has been successful in other events as well. In 2000 Ivey became the first person to beat the formidable Amarillo Slim heads-up in a tournament. He has reached the top 25 in the WSOP Main Event three times, securing the 10th place in 2003.
Ivey has not been able to replicate this success on the World poker Tour. Though he has reached the finals on seven occasions, his best ranking has been 2nd. But these seven appearances have got him $1.3 million as prize money. In 2006 Ivey made his first appearance on the European Poker Tour. He was leading before the final round but eventually had to settle for second place. The same year he participated in the inaugural European Poker Masters in London, finishing 7th in a who’s who of the poker world. Till the end of 2007 his live tournament winnings were in excess of $8 million.
Ivey regularly plays non-tournament poker as well. The $4,000-8,000 mixed cash game at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas is a favorite haunt. Nowadays he is with Full Tilt Poker, occasionally playing high stakes games there.
