Phil Hellmuth may be considered the best poker player in the world, simply because he has won more bracelets in the WSOP than anyone else.
Hellmuth was born in Wisconsin in 1964. In 1989 he became the youngest player to win the Main Event of the WSOP. He was only 24 at that time. He won his first WSOP bracelet that year. In 2007 Hellmuth won his 11th bracelet becoming the winner of the most number of bracelets. An interesting aspect to this is that all 11 bracelets have come in Texas Hold ‘Em games, which is a rare feat. Hellmuth has many other successes at WSOP. He has 63 WSOP Cashes, which is the highest, and 39 WSOP final tables, which is the tied highest. He is the seventh highest in all time winnings at WSOP. However Hellmuth as failed to win a World Poker Tour tournament, though he has made it to the final table twice. Hellmuth has participated in several other poker tournaments. He won in the 3rd season of Late Night Poker and also in the first National Heads-Up Poker Championship. Till the end of 2007 his live tournament winnings were in excess of $9.58 million, making him 4th on the All Time Money List.
Apart from being a professional player, Hellmuth was a tutor, writer and commentator. His instructional poker videos include Ultimate White To Black Belt Course and Phil Hellmuth's Million Dollar Poker Secrets. His books include Play Poker like the Pros, Bad Beats and Lucky Draws and The Greatest Poker Hands ever Played. He was a commentator on Bravo's Celebrity Poker Showdown.
Hellmuth has had a history of abrasive behavior at poker tables. On several occasions he has insulted other players. His most famous quote is “If luck weren't involved, I guess I'd win every one”. It is believed that Hellmuth engages in bad etiquette to promote his image of a poker brat.
