Johnny Chan
Johnny Chan is playing at Chan Poker. His nickname is The Orient Express.
Johnny Chan was one of the first Asian players to have made it big in the poker scene in America.
Chan was born in China in 1957. His family moved to the US in 1968, where they started restaurants. Chan was studying hotel management, when he dropped out and went to Las Vegas.
His tryst with fame began when he consecutively won the championship event of the WSOP in 1987 and 1988. He almost made it three in a row but had to settle for 2nd place in 1989. Almost 20 years have elapsed since Chan won back-to-back events and no one has been able to replicate his feat. Experts feel that given the increasing field and the intense competition no one will be able to do so.
Chan has won ten WSOP bracelets since 1985. He is tied in second place for the most number of bracelets, with the maximum a player has won being eleven. Most of his wins have come in Limit Texas Hold ‘Em games and he has won $3,744,331 at WSOP. Chan has enjoyed success at the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament, coming 2nd in February 2005, winning the Poker Superstars II in the summer of 2005. However he has never been at the final table on the World Poker Tour despite participating in several events. Till the end of 2007 his live tournament winnings were in excess of $5.9 million.
Many poker players have their idiosyncrasies and Chan’s is keeping an orange in front of him on the table. Many players believed that this was a lucky charm till Chan explained that he brought the fruit for its fragrance to counter the smell of smoke. Chan had given up both smoking and alcohol.
Chan owns a fast food franchise, is a consultant for casinos, writes for poker magazines and dreams of opening his own casino.
