Howard Lederer
Howard Lederer plays at Full Tilt Poker. His nickname is The Professor.
Howard Lederer was a budding chess talent. However he was introduced to poker at a New York chess club and took to the game like a fish to water.
Lederer was born in New Hampshire in 1964. He came from an illustrious family. His father was a writer, linguist and teacher. One of his sisters was a professional poker player and the other a poet. Lederer himself was studying at Columbia University when he began playing poker at the Mayfair Club. In 1994 he moved to Las Vegas to concentrate on high stakes poker games.
Lederer has won two World Series of Poker bracelets. In 2001 he won the $5,000 Limit Omaha Hi-Lo and in 2001 he won the $5,000 Deuce to Seven Draw. He has also won two World Poker Tour titles. Till the end of 2007 his live tournament winnings were in excess of $3.4 million.
In the poker world Lederer is known as “the professor” or as “Bub”. His focused and calm demeanor, analytical style of play and wins record has given him the nickname of “the professor”. In fact Lederer claims to apply Zen to his poker playing. Because of his obesity Lederer was given the nickname of “Bubba”. When he lost weight after a gastric bypass surgery this nickname was shortened to “Bub”.
Lederer has a history of not getting along too well with his colleagues. In 2002 he accused Daniel Negreanu for making inappropriate comments about his sister, Duke. Later Negreanu apologized the ill feeling was buried. At the World Poker Tour Grand Prix de Paris 2003, Lederer refused to shake hands with Tony Guoga. Guoga was notorious for needling and thus making his opponents lose concentration and Lederer held that this needling was the reason for his defeat.
Today Lederer is a part of the Full Tilt Poker, an online poker room that started operations in 2004.
