Gus Hansen was always a sports enthusiast. He played backgammon and tennis in his youth and now accepts private bets on sporting events and plays professional poker.

Hansen was born in Denmark in February 1974. He came to the University of California as an exchange student in 1993 and began to play poker at the Ocean View Card Room. He is known for his aggressive play, with a penchant for bluffing and confusing his opponents.

Hansen has had little success at the WSOP, making the final table only in 2006. However he has fared much better in the World Poker Tour. He is the only player to have won three World Poker Tour tournaments. He was the winner at the first WPT Bad Boys of Poker invitational event. He was inducted into the World Poker Tour Walk of Fame in 2004. Hansen has won several other events such as the inaugural European Poker Masters event, The London All Star Challenge, in 2006 and the inaugural $400,000 Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament. He has represented the Danish team in the PartyPoker Football & Poker Legends Cup tournament, which his team won. Hansen has played all over the world including Singapore’s Betfair Asian Poker Tour in 2006 and Australia’s Aussie Millions in 2007, which he won. He has also featured in Poker shows such as Professional Poker Tour, the second season of High Stakes Poker and NBC's Poker After Dark. Till the end of 2007 his live tournament winnings were in excess of $5 million.

Nowadays Hansen plays $200/$400 pot limit Omaha Hold ‘Em at Full Tilt Poker. In 2003 he, along with others, launched the online poker site pokerchamps.com. In 2005 the venture was sold to Betfair for over 15 million US dollars. Hansen however is still associated with the site. Hansen is a compulsive gambler and loses money very quickly.
