Default Knowing your outs

When playing Texas Hold'em it's good to know how many outs you have. An out is any card that is still in the deck, that if drawn, will improve a your hand.

For example if you're holding Ad Jd and the flop comes 2d 7d 10s you would have a flush draw with four diamonds. Since there are 13 diamonds in a deck, that would leave 9 other diamonds in the deck, in other words nine outs to make a flush. If you think you could also win with a pair of aces or pair of Jacks, there are 3 more aces and 3 more jacks for another 6 outs, for a total of 15 outs.

You can figure out your outs for any number of poker hands by counting how many cards are left in the deck, that will complete your hand to win the pot.

When i started really thinking about each card that would possibly come, it really helped my decisions. It's important to count your outs to figure if you're getting a good price on a call or just to know whether to stay in or get out of a hand. Well said XMEN.

Figuring out your outs is pretty simple but calculating the percentages are where I have problems. I don't even know how they come up with the percentages to tell you the truth. I see the poker pros on TV calling out the percentages pretty easily.

An easy way to calculate your outs into percentages, all you have to do is multiply by the number of outs by 2 for each card.

For example: You have a flush draw on the flop, which is 9 outs in the deck.

9 x 2 = 18%

You would have an 18% chance to make the flush on the Turn card. You have the same 18% chance to make it on the River card. So, if you wanted to know the percent for both, all you do is multiply your outs by 4, or just double the first number. So you would have about a 36% chance to make the flush if you are still on the flop.

Another example: You have AK on a missed flop. You think your opponent has a pair under KK. So you have about 6 outs left in the deck to make a higher pair.

6 x 2 = 12% chance to make it on each card.

So if you or the other player got it all in on the flop, it would be 24% total for both Turn and River cards.

Ah thanks Jimmyd

I will probably need to study percentages a bit more before i get the hang of it though. There is the software that does it for you online, but in live tournaments you don't get to bring your laptop with you.

Sometimes even some the poker pros have trouble figuring out the percentages I notice when watching poker on TV. There are others that figure it out instantly. They post the percentages on TV but I wish they would have explained how they came up with it. Glad I know now

Maybe anyone knows any good poker outs calculator that can be attached to a poker room and calculate your odds instantly?
