Doyle Brunson
Doyle Brunson plays at Doyle’s Room. His nickname is Texas Dolly.
Doyle Brunson has been on the poker scene for over 50 years and was the first player to earn $1 million in poker tournaments.
Brunson was born in Texas in August 1933. In his youth he had a keen interest in basketball. However a knee injury put an end to that avenue. He studied to get a master’s degree and took a job. But when he realized that he could make a month’s salary by playing a few hours of poker he set his sights on professional gambling.
Brunson has several claims to fame. He has won ten WSOP bracelets. He has won the main event at the WSOP in 1976 and 1977, being one of the four players to record consecutive wins. Also he is one of the five players to have won the WSOP Main Event and a World Poker Tour title in the same year. He was voted the most influential person in world poker in 2006 by BLUFF magazine. Two Texas Hold ‘Em hands named after Brunson. One is a ten and a two of any suit. He has won twice with this hand getting a full house in each case. The other hand is the Ace and Queen of any suit because Brunson never plays with this hand. Till the end of 2007 his live tournament winnings were in excess of $5.1 million. Brunson currently plays $4000/$8000 limit mixed poker game in "Bobby's Room" at the Bellagio.
Brunson is equally famous for his book Super System as he is for his poker. Originally published in 1978 it was a godsend for ordinary poker players. A revised version was published in 2004 in which several poker professionals contributed chapters.
Once his name was incorrectly announced as Texas Dolly instead of Texas Doyle and hence he became Texas Dolly in poker circles.
