Chris Ferguson has been nicknamed "Jesus" because of his long brown hair and beard and his impassive demeanor at the poker table.

Ferguson was born in Los Angeles California in April 1963. He came from an intensely academic family background. Both his parents have doctoral degrees in mathematics and his father teaches game theory at UCLA. Ferguson himself has a doctoral degree in computer science from UCLA, having researched virtual network algorithms. It is no wonder that he uses his mathematical background both while playing and studying the game.

Ferguson has been playing poker since he was ten years old. While at UCLA he played in chat rooms for real money. He first played in the World Series of Poker in 1995. In 2000 he won two WSOP bracelets in Seven Card Stud and No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em, the latter fetching him $1.5 million in prize money. He again won a bracelet in 2001 and two bracelets in 2003. Ferguson has excelled in the WSOP circuit events as well, being the only player to have won three events. In 2005 and 2006 he came second in the National Heads-Up Poker Championships losing to different players each time. Till the end of 2007 his live tournament winnings were in excess of $6.1 million

In 2004 Ferguson assisted in the launch of the online poker room, Full Tilt Poker, with some other celebrity players. He has demonstrated that one does not have to start with huge bankrolls to win at poker, especially on Internet poker rooms. He has also converted $1 to $20,000 playing online over a period of six months. The personal side of Ferguson was revealed in an interview on Poker Night Live, including his love for swing dancing.
