  TILT in Poker

TILT

TILT, the dirtiest word in poker. You always hear players talk about how they bluffed off all there chips because they were on tilt, or took advantage of the donkey at there table that was tilted. It seems responsible for winning, and losing millions in the online poker world. But what is it? It’s the one thing that poker players hate to admit they have, emotion, not just emotion, but emotion on the table rearing its ugly head. Its anger, frustration, and confusion all built into one. It’s the feeling that you will never make the right play again, it is to a poker player what a torn ACL is to a pro basketball player.

The best way to deal with tilt is to avoid it all together. There are certain signs that every player can feel happening to let them know tilt is coming. One of the biggest things that will initially put a player on tilt is being tired. If you are tired, you are more susceptible to making a mistake, which would put you on tilt. You are also going to be much more sensitive to things like bad beats, etc, which will certainly throw you on tilt in a hurry. If you find yourself constantly yawning, your eyes getting heavy, and just a feel of major fatigue in general, you should end your session ASAP.

We all run bad. Be aware enough of your play to see when the cards are coming your way and there doesn’t seem to be a single ace in the deck. We all take the bad beats, we all miss every single draw in a session, and we all get frustrated. How you deal with it could be the difference between cutting your losses and losing your whole roll. Get yourself away from the game for a bit, if you feel like you have calmed down and can return do so, but be very aware of when you are in this state, and don’t come back to soon.

Do not let other poker players attempt to put you on tilt, especially after a missed draw or after you have suffered a bad beat. You need to allow these comments to roll off your back and not affect the way you are playing and the decisions you are making. Play through it, wait for the next good hand to reward yourself with a nice pot, because it will come.

The best way to avoid tilt is staying away from the game when you feel like you are in a bad frame of mind. Poker is a game with a million little pieces that takes time to figure out and put together, and you can not let small set backs stand in your way! Play with a clear mind and you will succeed!
