The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) |
|
|
UIGEA
In 2006 the American Congress passed the the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). Since then there have been lots of speculation on how this will impact on online poker players from all around the world.
First of all it should be made clear that UIGEA in no way decides if online poker is legal in the US or not. The goal with the UIGEA is to stop banks and other financial institutions to process money transactions that has to do with gambling. In other words it should be harder for players to fund their poker accounts and it should also be harder to withdraw money from a poker site to a us bank account.
What also matters is the claiming that online poker is illegal in the US since earlier. This claiming often refers to the The Wire Act from 1961. This act prohibits spots betting, but it is uncertain if the act also regulates online poker and casino gambling. Even the politicians supporting the UIGEA have admitted that there are uncertainties about the wire act. What effect this act will finally have on the online gambling in the future is not entirely clear yet.
A number of poker rooms however have decided to take a chance and are allowing players from the us. These poker rooms accepting us player are also listed on this site. Most notable of those rooms are solid poker rooms like PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker.
Finally we should mention that the The UIGEA only affect us players. European players have not been stoped from playing online poker beacause of this act. However, european players will also be affectedby the loss of us players. To see a list of poker rooms accepting us players, click the link bellow:
